Located in Forest Hall, today a district to the outer north of Newcastle upon Tyne. The Ritz Cinema was opened on 9th November 1936 with Laurel & Hardy in 'The Bohemian Girl'. Designed by noted Newcastle architectural firm Percy Lindsey Browne & Son, seating was provided for 687 in the stalls and 375 in the circle. The proscenium is 30 feet wide, and there was a small 22 feet deep stage. There was also a cafe for the convenience of patrons.
Operated by the independent Hinges Cinemas circuit, it was closed on 2nd December 1962 with Audrey Hepburn in 'The Nun's Story'. Converted into an independently operated bingo club, which remains open today.
